Aveva System Platform Migration for Architectural Redesign & Modernization

From fragmented legacy systems to a unified and future-proof platform

A leading global food & nutrition manufacturer required the modernization of its Aveva System Platform environment at one of its production facilities in France.

The existing setup was based on two separate galaxies, outdated architecture, and legacy reporting systems, creating complexity and increasing operational risk.

The objective was to consolidate, redesign, and migrate the entire platform into a single, modern, and scalable architecture, while ensuring zero disruption to production.

Contec delivered a full migration and redesign of the Aveva System Platform, including historian and reporting systems, enabling improved system performance, reduced complexity, and long-term maintainability.

Project Highlights:

  • Consolidation of two Aveva galaxies into a single unified architecture
  • Migration to the latest Aveva System Platform version
  • Integration of Historian databases into a modernized environment
  • Migration of Microsoft Report Services
  • Parallel system testing (FAT) ensuring zero production risk
  • Seamless transition with no production downtime

The challenge

Modernizing a complex and poorly documented legacy system

The existing system consisted of two separate Aveva galaxies, with outdated architecture, unused logic, and limited documentation. This created complexity in maintenance, reduced transparency, and increased operational risk.

In addition, the system relied on legacy versions of Aveva System Platform, Historian, and Microsoft Report Services, making it difficult to maintain and scale.

A key challenge was to redesign the architecture while consolidating both galaxies into a single environment, ensuring data integrity and continuity across historian databases and reporting systems.

All of this had to be executed without impacting production, requiring a controlled and low-risk migration strategy.

Our approach

Controlled migration with architectural redesign and parallel validation

Contec approached the project with a structured migration strategy, starting with a full redevelopment of the Aveva System Platform architecture.

The two existing galaxies were merged into a single, optimized galaxy, followed by migration to the latest Aveva System Platform version. At the same time, historian databases were upgraded and integrated into the new system, ensuring continuity of historical data and seamless HMI interaction.

Microsoft Report Services were also migrated to align with the new architecture, enabling consistent reporting capabilities.

To eliminate production risks, a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) phase was executed by running the old and new systems in parallel for two weeks. This ensured full validation of functionality, performance, and data consistency.

Following successful validation, the system was commissioned on-site, with Contec providing immediate support during the transition and shutdown of the legacy system.
