Increasing distribution grid connection capacity

Supporting energy transition with increased electrification

Contec supports clients in their energy transition towards more electrification, addressing increased electricity consumption due to various upgrades and replacements. In a recent project, Contec expanded a factory grid connection from 15MVA to 24MVA, ensuring seamless integration and continuous power supply.

The challenge

Adapting to increased electricity consumption

Our clients are experiencing a significant increase in electricity consumption due to:

  • Installation of chargers for electrical vehicles and trucks
  • Replacement of gas boilers with electrical boilers and heat pumps
  • Replacement of steam turbines with high voltage motors

In a recent project, a factory required an expansion of its grid connection at 15kV from 15MVA to 24MVA to accommodate these changes.

Our approach

Comprehensive planning and execution

During a basic study, we identified the locations for the new main substation and planned the routing of high voltage cable loops. A load study revealed the need for three internal high voltage loops instead of one. We created single line diagrams and cable routing layouts, which formed the basis for a budget calculation of the total investment cost.

Once the budget was approved by the client’s management, we developed a detailed work description. This included:

  • Substation layout
  • Earthing layout
  • Detailed underground routing plans
  • HV material specifications
  • Complete material list

This comprehensive work package was sent to various electrical contractors for bidding. After evaluating the bids, the most suitable contractor was selected.

Throughout the construction and commissioning phases, we provided continuous support to ensure a smooth transition between the old and new main substation. The client’s subdivisions did not experience any disruption, as all consumers were kept powered 24/7.
